Target closing

Target, the nation’s second-largest discount retailer, can add 13 more store closures to its list of recent misfortune.

Another round of closures is in the works for Target, including one in the company’s home state of Minnesota. In all, 13 stores will shut permanently on January 30, 2016.

The nation’s second-largest discount retailer has had numerous troubles over the last several years. In 2013, Target suffered a data breach that resulted in the theft of credit card numbers and personal information belonging to millions of customers. That incident drove shoppers away, and the retailer was forced to close 19 stores in 2014.

In early 2015, Target gave up on its ill-fated expansion into Canada with a total net loss of $2 billion. Then layoffs hit the Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park corporate offices in the spring, with 2,500 jobs lost. Now 13 more shuttered stores will soon be added to Target’s list of misfortune.

“The decision to close a Target store is not made lightly,” Target Spokeswoman Kristy Welker said in a statement to the Duluth News Tribune. “We typically decide to close a store after careful consideration of the long-term financial performance of a particular location. Typically, the decision to close a store is as a result of seeing several years of decreasing profitability.”

The Target stores that will close in January are:

  • Anderson, Ind.
  • Austin North East (Austin, Texas)
  • Casa Grande, Ariz.
  • Columbus Southwest (Columbus, Ohio)
  • Dixie Highway (Louisville, Ky.)
  • East Flint (Flint, Mich.)
  • Northridge (Milwaukee)
  • Ottumwa, Iowa
  • Springfield, Ohio
  • Superior, Wis.
  • Suncoast Pasco County (Odessa, Fla.)
  • Victorville, Calif.

“All eligible Target store team members are being offered the option to transfer to other Target stores,” Welker said.
