Employee WellnessEmployee wellness has become a more prevalent focus of a lot of workplaces, with many companies spending more on wellness efforts. However, Gallup research shows that some employees may be missing out on these benefits because they don’t know about them.

Though a RAND Health study shows that 85% of employers in America offer some sort of workplace wellness option, Gallup’s data indicates that only 60% of these employees know about their company’s program.

Out of that 60%, only 40% of the aware employees participate in the program, according to Gallup.

“Companies must do more work to close the awareness and participation gaps that plague workplace wellness programs, and this is where managers play a vital role,” states the Gallup Business Journal. “Managers are uniquely positioned to ensure that each of their employees knows about the company’s wellness program, to encourage team members to take part, and to create accountability for results.”

Research shows that employee engagement and well-being are often connected, and management can help improve the connection.

Gallup’s research shows that employees who are engaged are over two times as likely to discuss their well-being with a manager. They categorize workplace well-being in five areas: purpose, social, financial, physical and community well-being.

Wellness plans that only address physical well-being may be missing out on some key benefits, according to Gallup.

Employees who do well in all five areas of well-being take 41% fewer sick days, have 65% fewer workplace accidents and are 81% less inclined to job search as the market improves.

Since companies spend an estimated $6 billion a year on wellness programs in the U.S. per year, creating a company culture that addresses all levels of employee wellness may help improve the return on investment.
