Digital Book World, an online networking and education platform for publishing professionals, has now launched Digital Book World University (DBW U) to provide resources and training for the digital publishing community.

DBW U’s first online course, which begins this month, teaches students how to develop an ebook that can be published on a number of digital platforms, including Nooks, Kindles and iBooks. The courses at DBW U are geared toward anybody who either publishes digital content themselves or works with digital publishers, including booksellers, consultants, agents and technology vendors.

On the university website, DBW editorial director Jeremy Greenfield talked about the importance of skill-development in the digital publishing community: “Technologies and business conditions change and industries will change with them, but when it comes to executing that change, it’s all about the people,” he said.

The university’s new online courses are designed to help digital professionals execute these changes in technology and business.

DBW University was created to meet the needs of digital publishing professionals who want to gain a deeper understanding of industry skills that they can gain from reading articles or attending industry webinars. The classes are taught by real-world experts in the digital publishing industry, who can offer information that can be applied directly to the work of digital professionals. DBW U said its aim is to help students gain a broader perspective of the industry and become more valuable to clients.

Digital Book World’s first class, which is focused on ebook creation, assumes a previous knowledge of basic HTML and CSS coding, as well as some experience using InDesign for book formatting. The course is designed for ebook developers, content conversion specialists, digital freelancers, print designers and self-publishing authors. With a duration of less than a month, the class consists of four lessons and multiple assignments completed individually.

DBW plans to introduce several new courses in ebook publishing, as well as courses that have to do with the business side of digital book publishing. Some future course topics will include workflow, quality assurance and advanced ebook design for different platforms.
