Business Major DecisionDeciding at the age of 18 what you want to do for the rest of your life is pretty crazy when you really think about it. Some people know what they want, but many feel really confused and overwhelmed with the decision-making process.

For students who are returning to school as adults, the decision can be just as difficult. Adult students know that education is an investment and they want to make sure that they get a good return on it. The major they choose is really important, which may increase the pressure to make the right choice.

Choosing a major is not a lifetime commitment to a specific job, but it does set you up with specific skills that will impact which jobs you are qualified for after graduation.

If you have no idea what you want to do, majoring in business may be a good choice. Here’s why:

Business Majors Have Options

Indecisive students often are afraid to commit to a major that restricts them to a career path they may not want. Majoring in business is a good potential fix, because there are many different paths that this major could lead to.

Thinking about working in the corporate world? Many business majors do. Want to work for a nonprofit organization, maybe? Business majors are a good fit. Think you might just want to start your own thing? Business majors often become entrepreneurs or small business owners.

Getting a degree in business may even help you decide what you want to do because you will have the opportunity to take classes in many different subject areas. Learning about a variety of topics could narrow down the fields that you enjoy the most.

Job-Searching May Be Easier

Good advice for anyone looking to choose a career is to go the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and do some research. You can find out the job outlook, median salary and education requirements for different positions.

Having used the BLS extensively, I can tell you that there are plenty of entry-level position options for business majors, with positions in fields like finance, human resources, sales, marketing and more.

Getting a job after graduation is important, so choosing a major that companies are hiring for can really help.

Choose a Major Like a Boss

A friend in college once told me, “I don’t know what I want to do, but I know I want to be in charge.”

Some people just want to be leaders, regardless of what industry they end up working in. Majoring in business can teach tangible skills, but it also the sort of soft skills that leaders need.

Business majors often learn to communicate, work in group settings and give presentations. These skills are as important for a small business owner they are for a Fortune 500 CEO.

Don’t choose just any major. Think about, look for career options and make sure to pick something with opportunities.
