Job StressHighly stressful work environments have caused 42% of Americans to leave a job, according to a study by career website, Monster.com.

Americans reported high stress in both an international Monster study and a U.S. only survey, where 55% of respondents claimed to have really stressful lives and 57% said their stress was due to work.

Having a bad relationship with a boss or a supervisor was one of the most common stressors in American workplaces, with 40% facing problems in that area.

Other frequent causes of stress included having too much work (39%), work-life balance (34%) and bad interactions with coworkers (31%).

“Workplace stress can come from any part of a job and triggers are different for everyone, so finding a true solution to stress tends to require a personalized approach,” said Mary Ellen Slayter, an expert on career advice for Monster, in a press release. “While every job will come with a degree of stress it is important to act if it becomes unmanageable.”

Some Americans have gotten so stressed at work that it negatively impacted their health, with 61% reporting that they got sick from stress, 46% missing work because of stress and 7% ended up in the hospital for stress-related illness.

Majority of respondents (84%) said that work stress has affected their personal lives, leading to issues like sleepless nights (impacted 26% of respondents), depression (impacted 24% of respondents) and problems in relationships (impacted 21% of respondents).

Time-off (13%) and flexible work schedules with an option to work from home (11%) were cited as the most common ways that companies worked to alleviate stress in the workplace. Unfortunately, most respondents (66%) said their companies did nothing to help alleviate workplace stress.

Paying attention to stress levels and finding patterns or triggers can help, said Slayter. Identifying specific problems can make it easier to find the right solutions for workplace stress.
