Business AppsMobile apps have transformed how we live our daily lives. We can find out the weather, order dinner for delivery or call a taxi, all from the palm of our hand.

But have they transformed the way we do business?

IBM and Apple are working to make that happen. Following their historic partnership announcement six months ago, these companies are teaming up to bring IBM’s business applications to Apple products using the IBM MobileFirst for iOS portfolio.

The tech giants have released 10 new apps tailored to specific industries. The apps combine IBM’s business smart with Apple’s user-friendly design, in an effort to make business apps as easy as consumer ones.

These apps target retail, airlines, government, telecommunications, financial services, insurance and banking industries.

“What we’re delivering aims directly at the new quest of business – smart technologies that unlock new value at the intersection of big data and individual engagement,’’ said Bridget van Kralingen, senior vice president of IBM Global Business Services.

Here is a rundown of some of the apps, which are created exclusively for iPhones and iPads.

For bankers, Advise & Grow gives small business bankers access to a client’s account, financial and credit information on the spot.

For insurance agents, an app called Retention provides updates on claims, missing information on applications and unpaid premiums.

For flight attendants, the Passenger+ app lets them check who will be missing connections when a flight is delayed and view alternative flights for rebooking passengers while in flight.

For pilots, Plan Flight allows them to better estimate fuel needs for upcoming flights without paper calculations or calls to air traffic control.

For retailers, Pick & Pack gives sales associates a real-time look at product availability and location within a store using iBeacon technology. With the Sales Assist app, associates can become fashion advisers for in-store customers, looking up inventory, suggesting clothing based on previous purchases and offering accessories to complement a look.

For law enforcement, the Incident Aware app gives police officers greater insight into emergency situations, including a bird’s-eye view of a scene’s perimeter and a live video feed.

For social workers, the Case Advice app provides relevant historical records, assessment data and industry guidelines to better manage clients on the go.

All of the apps were designed to help employees access their company’s capabilities faster, easier and more efficiently, ultimately improving the way professionals work.
