Happy Goggles

Some McDonald’s restaurants in Sweden are offering Happy Meals with a VR experience.

Some McDonald’s restaurants in Sweden are dishing up virtual reality headsets with their burgers and fries.

McDonald’s Sweden is introducing 3,500 Happy Meal boxes that turn into disposable virtual reality viewers. Called Happy Goggles, the cardboard viewers will be available at 14 restaurants over the weekends of March 5 and March 12. Each sells for about $4.10.

The fast food giant launched the campaign in connection with the Swedish holiday Sportlov, when many families go skiing. In honor of the day, McDonald’s created “Slope Stars,’’ a 360-degree virtual reality ski game endorsed by the Swedish National Ski Team, that customers can view on their Happy Goggles.

Customers create the red Happy Goggles by tearing along perforated lines on the box and folding it into a viewing device, then inserting VR lenses, which are included with each Happy Meal.

The Happy Goggles are available only in Sweden but, if successful, could be rolled out in other countries. Jeff Jackett, marketing director of McDonald’s Sweden, told AdFreak the idea behind Happy Goggles was to help parents connect with their children in an increasingly digital world.

McDonald’s is the latest company to experiment with repurposing its products into viewers. Last year, Pizza Hut in Hong Kong tried delivering some of its pizzas in specially designed boxes that convert into movie projectors.

Mattel attempted its own VR gadget for kids by rejuvenating its iconic View-Master toy for a 21st Century audience. With a smartphone and app, View-Master users can see distant locations for the relatively affordable price of $29.99.

Low-cost VR devices have gained in popularity ever since the launch of the Google Cardboard viewer. Google recently put the viewer on sale in its online store, making it widely available for purchase rather than just through special promotions.

The Cardboard VR View-Master and C1-Glass VR provide viewers an immersive experience using their smartphone. The Google Tech C1-Glass VR Viewer is designed for “VR adventures on the go” and sells for $15.

Google Cardboard is compatible with iPhones and most Android smartphones.
