A Nebraska university is introducing a new online degree in business administration that allows students to complete coursework at their own pace.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program at Bellevue University will be able to set their own deadlines for projects, papers and quizzes during each six-month session. As long as their assignments are fulfilled by the end of the session, students won’t face penalties for tardiness under the Flexxive learning system.

University officials said the Flexxive model is the first program of its kind and is designed to meet the needs of nontraditional students.

“Working adults need the flexibility to learn at their own pace and on their own terms,” Bellevue University President Mary B. Hawkins said in a statement in February 2013.

Hawkins noted that about 50% of the jobs projected to be created over the next decade will require workers to have more than a high school diploma.

“Earning a college degree has never been more important than it is right now,” she said.

The BBA degree program, which will be offered beginning in the summer of 2013, will have a per-credit hour cost of $250. However, the Flexxive learning program also features a flat-rate pricing system that caps tuition at 12 credit hours for each session, meaning students can take more credits without paying more.

The university said the flat-rate pricing will give students the option to cut their total tuition costs by more than half. In addition, students won’t have to buy books because classroom reading assignments will be available online.

“It’s not about just getting a degree. It’s about getting a degree that is relevant and affordable,” Hawkins said. “Americans need to focus on getting degrees that will translate into employment.”

The regionally accredited Bellevue University was ranked among the top 10 Best Online Bachelor’s Programs in 2013 by U.S. News & World Report. Founded more than 40 years ago, the university now serves about 11,000 students each year at locations in five states. Bellevue has been offering online degree programs since the mid-1990s.
